There is No Open Borders Policy

First, I should make clear, there is no straight up open borders policy. True open borders means everyone can legally come to, and stay in, the U.S. as long as they are not a known security risk. Crossing the border is still illegal unless permission is given or one has appropriate documentation. Simply calling the border open or Biden’s policies open borders is misleading rhetoric.

That said, a lot of people are being let in. The border system is broken, and Biden’s lighter hand against illegal immigrants and those applying for asylum has encouraged more to come.

Asylum is Broken

One method of legal immigration is to come to the United States and claim asylum. People have the right to do this. Legally, and ethically, if people are going to be killed but not for living in the U.S., we want them here and have a process for them to live here legally.

The problem is, the number of people applying for asylum has skyrocketed. The system requires agents or judges to review people’s claims and make a decision on whether they qualify for asylum. This takes time, personnel, and resources. The government just doesn’t have the resources to deal with all the asylum seekers.

Ideally, Congress would surge resources to help process these people in a reasonable amount of time. But, A.) Congress refuses to…
